Parent Support Groups

Kids don’t come with instructions!  Being a parent is a tough job.  Sometimes it helps to connect with others who are experiencing the same challenges.  Here is a list of some of the support groups in Hays and the surrounding areas:

Autism Support Group

Description:  This group provides information and support to parents of autistic children.  This group does not meet regularly.

Cancer Support Group:
Contact:  785-623-5757
Description:  For anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer and family members currently dealing with cancer.
Monthly Meetings from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Center for Health Improvement
Cost: Free

Diabetes Informational Meetings
Contact:  For questions or to RSVP call Jenny at 785-623-2305
Description:  A variety of topics will be presented to anyone interested in learning more about the management of diabetes.  Open to persons with diabetes and their family.
Cost:  Free

Healing After Loss
Center for Life Experiences

Description:  This group provides support to those who have experienced the loss of an adult – parent, spouse, friend.  Meetings are at 7 pm the second Tuesday of the month.
Cost: Free

Healing Hearts Support Group

Description:  This group provides support to parents who have lost a child.  Meetings are at 7 pm the first Thursday of each month.

La Leche League

Program Description:  La Leche League is an international, non-sectarian service dedicated to providing free support, education, information, and encouragement to women who choose to breastfeed.  http://www.laleheleague.org

Look Good Feel Better
Contact:  785-623-5757 to register.
Description:  A special session that assists women undergoing cancer treatment learn to cope with the appearance-related side effects of treatments and regain a sense of control over their lives. Sessions are held monthly at the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute by the American Cancer Society.

MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)

Description:  Since 1973, MOPS International, a nonprofit organization, has helped create communities and resources to help make “better moms who make a better world.” A MOPS group is a place where moms can come — just as they are — to build friendships, receive mothering support, and get practical help and spiritual hope.   The group meets the second Saturday of the month from 9:30 to 11:30 am at the Messiah Lutheran Church.

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group

This group provides information on research and treatments, local programs, and services to people with MS and their families and caregivers.  Meetings are at 1 pm the 1st Saturday of each month.  http://www.nationalmssociety.org/kss/home/

NWKDSS (Northwest Kansas Down Syndrome Society)

Program Description:  This group provides advocacy and support for families who have a child with Down Syndrome.  NWKDSS provides social gatherings, monthly meetings, sharing library, baskets for new members and possible stipends for conference travel.

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill

Program Description:  NAMI is a peer support and advocacy group for families and consumers with mental illness.  Meetings are 7pm – 9 pm the 2nd Monday of each month.  www.nami.org

      Deborah – I haven’t heard of one in our area. I’ll email some colleagues and see if they know of one.
